why do we need education?

The need of education and its importance is clearly emphasized by the addressing President Barak Obama. He clearly stated that education is extremely crucial for holding a good job and a good career. Along with this, a staggering $4.35 billion in competitive grants was announced, as part of the Race to the Top initiative to bolster education reforms. However, limiting knowledge merely for the purpose of securing a well-paying job, is an insult to its significance in human lives. So, what other factors make it so crucial?

Necessity of Education

Education helps us with many things, but most importantly, it empowers an individual to think, question, and see beyond the obvious. Human beings are born with a natural tendency to question. Education is the best way to satiate our curiosity, without extinguishing the burning desire to learn and explore more. Here are a few 'obvious' reasons for educating oneself.

✍ Education broadens our horizon and gives us a better understanding of the world around us and how things work.

✍ The world needs education since it is the basis of a civilized, structured society.

✍ Education helps people to think rationally and avoid illusions in life.

✍ Education reduces social and economic disparity, allowing progress to be shared equally.

✍ It gives scope for technical advancements in fields of science and technology.

✍ Studies indicate that educated people have longer life expectancies. They tend to lead a healthier lifestyle by exercising more and playing more sports. Most of them understand the implications of diet and lifestyle on their health, enabling them to make healthy choices.

✍ On an average, educated people have more meaningful and exciting jobs than those held by uneducated people. They are usually in a position to make decisions at work. This results in higher job satisfaction which leads to a better quality of life.

✍ Educated people are found to have higher self-esteem. Their lives are mostly well-planned and have a positive direction. They have better problem-solving skills and are consequently better equipped to handle everyday decisions.

✍ Children of educated parents have access to better education facilities. These children have a higher cognitive development as compared to children of uneducated parents.

✍ Educated people are better positioned to contribute positively to society, and even towards the environment, as they understand the implications of their choices and actions.

✍ In developing countries, education is viewed as means to alleviate poverty and engineer social change. It isn't a magic pill for solving all the problems. But it can surely be a ladder to climb out of poverty, exclusion, ignorance, oppression, and war.

One may turn back the pages of history and reexamine primitive societies and their wild lives. It is the best way to realize the need for education. Many ineffective, modern educational systems have proved successful in opening people's eyes, but they have closed people's minds. It is critical to analyze needs and improvise the support system to ensure a better future for forthcoming generations. Its purpose should be to empower mind and soul, to achieve its full potential. Whether our systems meet or hinder that goal is another discussion.

There are some more reasons which explain that what is the importance of education:

1. For a happy and stable life

If you want to lead a happy life and enjoy the good things the world has to offer, you certainly need to get educated. A great job, a good social reputation are few of the many benefits of being an educated person. Education is a must for a promising and secure future and a stable life.

2. Money

An educated person has more chances of landing up a good high paying job. Everybody wants a good life but the good life!. It may be called as the “root of all evil, ” but most people will agree that money is necessary for survival in today’s world. The more educated you are, the better career options you have. As per the definition of economics, money is that pivot around which the whole world revolves.

3. Equality

If we want to see the world as a just and fair place where everyone is given equal opportunities, education is what we require. Education is a must if we want to do away with the existing differences between different social classes and genders.  It opens a whole world of opportunities for the poor so that they may have an equal shot at well-paying jobs. Education also plays a significant role in women empowerment.

4. Makes your self-dependent

Education is crucial if you want to be a self-dependent person. It helps you become financially independent, but that is not all.  Education also makes you wiser so that you can make your own decisions.

5. Turns your dreams into reality

What is your goal, your aim in life? Do you want to become rich?  Do you want to be popular? Do you want to be a hugely successful person who is respected by individuals? Well, the key to all this is education. Of course, there are exceptions, like sportsmen who don’t really owe their success to their studies. However, in most cases, your degree is what helps you realize all your dreams.

6. Saves you from being fooled/cheated

Education protects you from being exploited and misled. We live in a country where we enjoy some rights and freedom.  It is easier to take advantage of innocent and illiterate people. They may be trapped into signing false documents or be deprived of some right which they have because unlike an educated person they are not well aware of their rights and freedoms.

7. For economic growth of the nation

Australia, USA, and Japan are few countries with very high literacy rates. These countries are extremely prosperous, and the citizens have a high per capita income.  On the other hand, in underdeveloped and developing nations, where the literacy rate is not as high, some people are still living below the poverty line. Education is vital for the economic prosperity of a nation!

8. Society

We all live in a society which has its own set spoken/unspoken rules, and one of them is education. The society expects you to go to school followed by college, get a job, settle down, etc. In fact, education helps you become a useful member of the society. An educated member certainly has a greater chance to contribute to his community. Education helps you become an active participant in the community and participate in the ongoing changes and developments.

9. Makes you confident

Your educational degree is considered as a proof of your knowledge by many. If you are educated you have more chances of being heard and taken seriously. Generally, an uneducated man will find it harder to express his views and opinions owning to lack of confidence. Even if he does so, people may not take him seriously. Education gives you the confidence to express your views and opinions.

10. Makes the world a safer and more peaceful place

Education majorly affects our understanding of the difference between right and wrong. An educated person is well aware of the consequences of wrong/illegal actions, and he is less likely to get influenced and do something which is not legally/morally right. Also, some uneducated people who live a poor life owning to lack of opportunities often turn to illegal ways such as theft and robbery to solve their problems. If you are educated, you are well aware of your rights, the law and your responsibilities towards the society. Hence, education is a major factor which contributes to social harmony and peace.

11. Helps you understand the world we live in

Education is what you need if you want an answer to your ‘whats’ and ‘hows’ and ‘wheres.' It helps you understand the world you live in. You get to know more about your surroundings as well as the whole world through subjects like history, geography, science, etc.

12. Respect

Everybody likes a wise and knowledgeable person! Educated people are considered highly reputable in the society. The more educated you are, the more respect you will get from those around you.everyone in today's world want self-esteem which they drive from education only.

13. Education and healthcare

Illiteracy often breeds ignorance, and this ignorance may prove to be dangerous when it comes to healthcare. Educated people know better about preventive methods which protect them from some diseases. An illiterate and ignorant person is more likely to ignore the symptoms and avoids seeking medical aid unless the problem becomes far-reaching. Hence education enables you to take better care of yourself as well as your family.

14. Keeping up with the world

We live in an ever-changing world. New technologies keep coming up, and if you don’t want to be left behind, you must keep up with the world which is moving quickly. Without education, it will be tough for you to adapt to all these changes. An educated person is much more aware of the latest technologies and all the changes that are taking place in the world. For example, an uneducated person may not know about the benefits of the internet whereas an educated person uses this gift of technology regularly for work as well as for entertainment.

15. Overcoming Superstitions

Superstitions are baseless, useless and may affect your life negatively. Illiterate and uneducated people often tend to hold certain superstitious beliefs.  Education and awareness are the best ways to combat superstitions and replace such beliefs with reason and logic.
